Title:
War Crimes Tribunal and Amnesty International Reports on "Terrorism" by
NATO
*War Crimes Tribunal: After an "internal report", Carla del Ponte, Chief
Prosecutor for the Tribunal, informed the UN Security Council, according
to the Chicago Tribune (6/8/2000), that "her investigation found no
basis for charging NATO or its leaders with war crimes."
* Amnesty International: The London based group, according to the
Chicago Tribune (6/8/2000), concluded that "NATO's bombing of the
Belgrade headquarters of Radio Television Serbia on April 23, 1999 'was
a deliberate attack on a civilian object and as such constitutes a war
crime.'" Sixteen people died. Amnesty International also condemned the
NATO attack on a bridge on May 30, 1999, at Varvarin. Eleven people
died. According to Amnesty International, "NATO forces failed to suspend
their attack after it was evident that they had struck civilians"
(Chicago Tribune, 6/8/2000, p. 4). "NATO Secretary General George
Robertson called the allegations 'baseless and ill-founded'" (Chicago
Tribune, 6/8/2000, p. 4).
